| Here is my goodbye note I sent out at work and the title I sent it out under.
Hi all,
Well after 12 years and 3 months at Apple the run is over. Not by my choice, but those are the breaks. I was asked to move to Dallas, but those who know my personal situation know that that would have been financial suicide.
It will be sad leaving all the people on both the OEM and Apple side that I've had a pleasure to work with. It's even more sad when I hear so many groups begging for resources, when we have an engineer with a proven record of coming in with no background to make an instant impact. Wish I could help.
However, I'm pretty happy with all that I have accomplished. A long list that I will not bore you with, but some of the high lights are Fullerton from the "Worst Factory I've Ever Been In" to never needing a Director visit & never a quality escalation, the smooth transition to Dallas, M98 Proto 2, M43a PVT, iMac transition to FXLH and countless others. I'm most proud of all the things that I fixed in the background that most of you never hear about, that's part of knowing how Sustaining REALLY works.
Thanks to those who dropped me note, a call or an iChat when you found out. The quotes have brought a smile to my face. I'll share the PG ones:
"WHAT?" "Chris, you can't leave." "You know this makes everyone's job harder?" "Morty, you know my job will now become a whole lot more difficult."
and my favorite
"What? Do they even know what you do?"
So thanks everyone. You reach me through my .me/.mac account or through Abel Flores or Eric Leister. And remember, it's a very small world so I'll see you around.
Chris "Morty*" Mortensen
*Mort for short if your name is Chip Hills
*************************************************** The results have been 50 replies. 8 iChats. 2 phone calls - all under 24 hours. Three people claiming to be crying (two of which are men)
| Well gang the end is near. After 12 years and 3 months at Apple, I'm being laid off.
The reason? I'm not willing to move to Dallas. The factory that I've been supporting for the past 6 years decided to move here in an attempt to lure the iMac business from a competitor. I knew when they moved my days were numbered. The constant traveling has taken it's toll.
So Wednesday the 30th of September will be my last day.
| I read this article in the latest issue of AutoWeek.
It is so close to my own beliefs that I had to share it. Please read it.

If you don't get it or believe it, then I fear that we are doomed.

| .... your screwed. And that was me last Thursday, making me have to stay another day in Texas.
Here is the ordeal for your enjoyment:
There was a massive thunder storm Wednesday night / Thursday morning in Dallas. Eight inches of rain and 130KPH winds. American Airlines cancelled 350 flights on Thursday including my flight home. Apple travel got me a flight on Friday but going to San Francisco but with no assigned seat. I got to the airport at 8:30 for the 12 noon flight. Got an assigned seat.
Then the plane was late.
Then we got on the plane and waited over an hour as now there was mechanical problem.
Then they let people off the plane because they didn't know how long it would take to fix. I stayed on the plane.
They finally fixed it but then they had to reload the plane. We finally took off 4 hours late. Arrived at 6 (CA time) just in time for rush hour.
Hertz gave me a car with the tank only 7/8 full.
Got to Sacramento at 9, then spent 1/2 hour at Hertz getting them to adjust the bill for the gas. Then needed to take two buses to get to where my truck was parked.
Got home at 10 (12 midnight Texas time)
That really sucked.

| OK, so I missed a couple of items on my list of the crap that has gone wrong.
My wife has suffered Sudden Hearing Loss Syndrome. Basically she has lost all hearing in her left ear. GONE. Replaced by a constant buzzing. Effects her balance too.
On a positive note I got a bonus, $3000. For doing the impossible. $1700 after taxes. Great!
A few days later faithful truck, Barney, of 165k miles finally left my stranded. In my back yard. After finishing towing a car over to a friends house. Diesel Injector Pump failed. Towing = $200, Replacement Pump = $1700. Bye bonus.
I bought a 1975 Plymouth Trail Duster with a bad transmission. Adjusted the bands and installed new fluid, but the tranny is still NFG. Damn!
Our backup car, a 1991 Mazda Pick Up is draining it's battery. Can't find the power draw so I can't use it to go to the airport. Crap.
Got an offer from the people that want to take my land. $13000. Half of what they offered a year ago. They think they can buy land for $22k an acre and not pay for land that has an easement on it. It's Lawyer time.
Oh and I'll tell you about my impending employment demise later.
